Sea turtles are such magnificent creatures, and visiting places where you can see them and contribute to their protection is really an enriching experience. Here are four of the best places to see and support these incredible animals
Tortuguero, Costa Rica
Known as the “Land of Turtles,” Tortuguero is one of the most important nesting sites for green sea turtles. From July to October, you can witness these incredible creatures laying their eggs on the sandy shores. Many local conservation programs allow visitors to volunteer in protecting nests, releasing hatchlings, and learning about turtle ecology.
Zakynthos, Greece
The Greek island of Zakynthos is home to the National Marine Park, which provides an important habitat for endangered loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta). Beaches around Laganas Bay are key nesting sites. Eco-friendly tours, including volunteer programs that involve nest protection and education on sustainable tourism practices, can be joined by visitors.
Gili Islands, Indonesia
The Gili Islands have crystal-clear water and great marine life, making them the perfect destination for spotting sea turtles on a snorkelling or diving adventure. Hatcheries for turtle eggs take place in Gili Trawangan and Gili Meno, which help raise awareness on the conservation of turtles. Visitors are able to participate in hatchling releases and learn from the issues the turtles face in their livelihood.
Great Barrier Reef, Australia
The Great Barrier Reef is a haven for six species of sea turtles, including the green, loggerhead, and hawksbill turtles. Several conservation centers, such as the Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre, allow visitors to learn about rehabilitation efforts and even volunteer to help injured or sick turtles recover. Nesting season, from November to March, is a particularly magical time to visit.
